Experience the Majesty of Camels at the Alamo on World Camel Day

On World Camel Day, Camels are making a comeback at the Alamo on Saturday

On Saturday, July 22, the Alamo in San Antonio will host an educational event featuring camels in honor of World Camel Day. From 9 a.m. to noon, visitors can witness the majestic animals on the Alamo grounds as part of a historic reenactment organized by the Texas Camel Corps, founded in 1997 by Doug Baum.

The Texas Camel Corps travels to various locations across the state, including schools, museums, libraries, and historical sites like the Alamo, to host unique events that showcase the history and importance of camels in American culture and society. During their time at the Alamo, visitors can learn about the advantages and disadvantages of using camels over horses and mules in extreme heat with limited water sources.

While camels were not widely used by the U.S. Army after their trial run at the Alamo in the 1850s, they remained a vital part of its history during its time as a military outpost. The event is open to the public and free of charge, with no ticket required. Visitors can observe the camels in action during this exciting event held at 300 Alamo Plaza in San Antonio.
