Expanding the Palmetto Artisan Program: Nurturing Creative Talent and Promoting Profitability among Charleston’s Youth with the Help of Community Solutions Consultant LLC

Expansion of Palmetto Artisan Program Provides Increased Business Opportunities for Young People

The city of Charleston is collaborating with a consulting firm to expand the Palmetto Artisan Program, an initiative aimed at nurturing the creative talents of the city’s youth while providing them with vital business skills. Community Solutions Consultant LLC is working closely with the city to transform the program from a seasonal flower-making activity to a year-round opportunity for young participants to run their own businesses under the guidance of mentors.

The program’s goal is to foster creativity and profitability among youth by introducing new products this summer, allowing participants to explore their imagination. One success story is Zihaire Jackson, who launched his own business, Palmetto Artisan Company, through the program. Jackson plans to expand beyond flower production and offer items like shirts, hoodies, and more featuring unique logos.

Eric Jackson, co-manager of Community Solutions Consultant, emphasizes the focus on developing essential business skills among participants, such as money management. The program also involves parents in the economic development process, with the ultimate objective of helping each participant establish their own Limited Liability Company (LLC).

Currently, there are 25 participants in the program who can be found selling their wares on weekends at Concord and Calhoun Streets near the South Carolina Aquarium and at the Charleston City Market. The organizers stress that ongoing vending opportunities are crucial for aspiring entrepreneurs and encourage them to join the year-round program.

For youth interested in joining the program, an application form is available for submission.
