Expanding Connections: Laos and Vietnam Strengthen Ties through Transport Infrastructure and Defense Cooperation

Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam recently met to discuss ways to enhance transport infrastructure connectivity and defense and security cooperation between their countries. The meeting took place at the government headquarters in Hanoi, where Mr. Siphandone was attending the ASEAN Future Forum.

During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening various aspects of connectivity, including institutions, finance, transport infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, and tourism. They also expressed their support for each other in building independent economies and integrating internationally. Efforts will be made to address any challenges and create a favorable environment for Vietnamese businesses investing and operating in Laos.

Furthermore, the two Prime Ministers discussed the significance of increasing high-level visits and contacts as well as enhancing defense and security cooperation to effectively address various challenges such as border management and combating transnational crime. They emphasized the importance of defense and security cooperation in ensuring social order and safety in both countries.

The leaders agreed to continue coordinating closely and supporting each other at regional and international forums such as ASEAN, the United Nations, and Mekong sub-regional mechanisms. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to supporting Laos in successfully fulfilling its international responsibilities in 2024, including its role as ASEAN Chairmanship.

Bilateral trade between the two countries in the first quarter of 2024 reached 476.8 million USD, showing a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
