Eurozone Unemployment Rate Decreases Slightly in April, Leaving Croatia Below Average

The Unemployment Situation for Young Spaniards, Swedes, and Croatians

In April, the unemployment rate in the eurozone saw a slight decrease. This was reflected in Croatia, which remained below the average of countries using the Euro currency. According to Eurostat’s report, the International Labor Organization (ILO) measured the unemployment rate at 6.4 percent in April, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from March and the previous April. The wider EU also saw a consistent unemployment rate of six percent.

In the 20-member eurozone, almost 13.2 million citizens were unemployed in April, with nearly 11 million of them in the eurozone itself. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 100 thousand in the eurozone and 103 thousand in the EU from March.

Spain and Greece were the only countries with double-digit unemployment rates in April, at 11.7 and 10.8 percent respectively. However, Croatia’s unemployment rate was measured using ILO methodology and came out at 5.3 percent in April – an improvement from the previous month when it was at 5.6 percent – with nearly 92 thousand citizens still without work. The country’s youth unemployment rate was at a staggering 17.9 percent in Q1 of this year alone – despite some improvements made over time towards lower rates of youth unemployment within Croatia and across Europe as a whole: Spain recorded an even higher youth unemployment rate than Croatia at around twenty-six five per cent while Germany and Czech Republic had much lower rates at about five point eight per cent each respectively.
