EU Approves Groundbreaking Net Zero Industry Act to Boost Domestic Clean Technology Manufacturing

The European Union has recently approved the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA), a groundbreaking law aimed at strengthening its clean technology manufacturing sector. This act, approved on Monday, sets a challenging target for the EU to produce 40% of its solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps, and other clean tech equipment domestically by 2030.

The NZIA is a key element of the EU’s strategy to maintain its leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and manufacturing the necessary technologies to support this transition. Currently, Europe relies heavily on China, which is expected to dominate 80% of the global solar power manufacturing capacity. Moreover, the EU faces competition from the U.S., which has allocated $369 billion in green subsidies through the Inflation Reduction Act, potentially enticing European producers to move to America.

The legislation is scheduled to come into effect in the following month or by early July, subsequent to the official signing by the presidents of the European Parliament and the Council and its publication in the EU’s official journal.
