Epiphany in Space: The Fascinating Connection Between Peak Experiences and Astronomy Research

How Science Can Spark ‘Peak Experiences’ to Enhance Well-being

In the mid-20th century, psychologist Abraham Maslow interviewed people about their lives in pursuit of understanding happiness. Through his research, Maslow discovered that many individuals reported experiencing rare moments of epiphany that brought feelings of awe, rapture, ecstasy, or bliss. These moments were associated with a profound sense of connection to the world around them and were linked to a deep understanding and insight into the essence of things. Maslow dubbed these experiences “peak experiences,” which research now shows can have a lasting impact on an individual’s well-being.

Meanwhile, several organizations are dedicated to space exploration and research. NASA, the American space agency, is renowned for its missions to investigate the universe and beyond. The European Space Agency (ESA) collaborates with NASA on various projects and conducts its own missions to study space. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) contributes to international space missions and conducts research on space technologies. Lastly, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) operates the Hubble Space Telescope and conducts research on stars, galaxies, and other celestial bodies in our universe.
