Ensuring Food Safety: The Wyoming Department of Agriculture’s Regular Inspections of Restaurants

Weekly Health and Food Inspections in Campbell County (6/17/24–6/23/24)

The Wyoming Department of Agriculture conducts regular inspections of retail food establishments, especially in areas where there is no local health department. These meetings are common occurrences in the food service industry, and they are done to ensure the safety of customers and residents of the state. In Gillette, Wyoming, for example, the Consumer Health Services Division of the Wyoming Department of Agriculture conducts routine inspections to maintain compliance with regulations.

During these inspections, restaurants are evaluated for compliance with non-critical (non-food-related) or critical violations that could potentially cause foodborne illnesses. The main goal of the Wyoming Department of Agriculture is to educate businesses about unsafe practices and help them correct any deficiencies. Violations can vary in severity, but any violation will render the business out of compliance.

The inspection reports conducted by the department are made public and can be found on their website. For example, an inspection on June 18, 2024 at Liberty Sweets Bicentennial revealed a violation related to hot water not being available that day. However, during this inspection, there were zero violations at Gillette Golf & Country Club which indicates compliance with regulations.

Inspections by the department are considered a “snapshot” in time and violations are often corrected before the inspector leaves the facility. Depending on the severity of the violation, establishments are given a period ranging from 10 to 45 days to correct it. Any serious violations or notable comments are included in summary notes but the full report for each restaurant can be found on their website.

In summary, meetings between health inspectors and restaurant chefs are essential in ensuring customer safety and maintaining regulatory compliance in Wyoming’s food service industry. Through regular inspections and education efforts by government agencies such as Wyoming Department of Agriculture’s Consumer Health Services Division
