Energy to Care: Midland Memorial Hospital’s Commitment to Sustainability and Cost Savings

ASHE Recognizes MMH for Successful Energy Reduction Initiatives

Chuck Brooks, Director of Hospital Engineering at Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH), will be honored with an Energy to Care Award from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association. The award recognizes MMH for their dedication to tracking their energy, water, and emissions reduction efforts, as well as their commitment to sustainability.

Since the Energy to Care Program began in 2006, participation has steadily increased, with more than 4,400 facilities taking part since 2010. This has led to a combined savings of over $550 million reallocated to patient care. MMH is among 102 participating facilities in 2024 that have received this award, representing just 2.3% of all enrolled facilities.

Kara Brooks from the American Hospital Association congratulated MMH on their commitment to sustainability and reaching this milestone. Abraham Bejil, Vice President of Facility Services at MMH, emphasized the hospital’s dedication to creating a healthy environment for patients, staff, and the community by reducing their carbon footprint and promoting sustainability.

The Energy to Care program is dedicated to helping healthcare facilities track their energy, water, and emissions reduction efforts and recognizes hospitals and health systems that exceed their sustainability goals. Participants report their energy and water consumption as well as greenhouse gas emissions in the Energy to Care Dashboard. Award winners demonstrate significant reductions in energy use intensity.
