Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), the designer of the Burj Khalifa tower, is partnering with Energy Vault to create gravity energy storage systems that turn skyscrapers into giant batteries. This collaboration aims to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions by optimizing sustainable building architecture for the future.

Under this partnership, SOM will be the exclusive structural engineer and architect for Energy Vault’s gravity energy storage system (GESS). They will integrate this technology into high-rise buildings in urban areas and natural conditions to maximize sustainability and reduce electricity consumption costs. Energy Vault’s president and CEO, Robert Piconi, believes that combining their technology with SOM’s expertise will lead to significant reductions in carbon emissions from building operations.

SOM and Energy Vault have been working together for a year now to optimize the structure, architecture, and economics of GESS technology. This technology plays a crucial role in renewable energy deployment globally. Energy Vault’s previous projects include a storage system near Shanghai that can deliver 25 megawatts of power for four hours. SOM is designing storage systems that use bricks or water, with one tall cylindrical tower specifically designed for urban environments. This skyscraper battery could potentially be much taller than Energy Vault’s Shanghai project, starting at around 300 meters.

In addition to their work on gravity energy storage systems, Energy Vault and SOM are also focusing on online lottery betting opportunities.
