End of Leverkusen’s Unbeaten Run: Defeat in Europa League Final, But Triumph in Bundesliga

Alonso of Leverkusen finds pride in facing defeat

Leverkusen’s unbeaten run of 51 games came to an end in the Europa League final against Atalanta. Despite the defeat, Leverkusen had an exceptional year and won the Bundesliga. Xabi Alonso, the Leverkusen boss, expressed pride in the team’s achievements but admitted that losing the Europa League final was tough to accept.

Alonso acknowledged that Atalanta was a better team on the night and deserved to win the trophy. He described the defeat as painful, especially because it happened in such an important match. Despite relying on last-minute heroics to keep their unbeaten run alive, it wasn’t enough against a dominant Atalanta side who controlled the game from start to finish.

Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick helped Atalanta secure their first trophy in 61 years, ending Leverkusen’s hopes of completing the season unbeaten and winning a treble. However, despite disappointment, Leverkusen must now regroup and focus on the German Cup final against Kaiserslautern. Alonso emphasized finishing strong and potentially securing a second trophy to cap off a memorable campaign. He praised Leverkusen for their achievements in both the Bundesliga and Europa League competitions and highlighted their impressive runs throughout multiple seasons.

Leverkusen must now look forward to another season where they hope to repeat their successes of this past year. With Alonso at his best, Leverkusen will continue to push for greatness in all competitions they enter into next season.
