Emotional Gray Defeats Former Team in St. Louis Cardinals Win

Sonny Gray shines in triumphant return to Oakland, secures 100th career victory

Gray, the highly-coveted offseason signing for the St. Louis Cardinals, once again proved his worth in a 3-1 victory over his former team, the Oakland Athletics. On Monday, Gray pitched six scoreless innings and struck out six in a road start. This was his second win in as many games as the Cardinals secured their victory at Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum.

Gray’s time with the Athletics holds special significance as it will be his last start at the stadium where he made his MLB debut in 2013. The Athletics are planning to relocate to Sacramento next season and then move to Las Vegas in 2028.

Describing his start as emotional, Gray reflected on his time with the Athletics and the many memories he has made at the Coliseum. Winning 44 games with Oakland, he also earned his first MLB win at the stadium nearly a decade ago.

Starting his Cardinals career strong, Gray has had two scoreless outings since coming off the injured list due to a hamstring strain. In Monday’s game, key hits from Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, and Jordan Walker contributed to the 3-1 victory.

The three-game series at Oakland continues through Wednesday, with fans eagerly anticipating more strong performances from Gray and the rest of the Cardinals team. For more news on this story and others like it, stay tuned to FOX 2 for all your latest sports coverage and updates.
