Ellinikon: Greece’s $8 Billion Smart City in the Making

Athens Transforms Vacant Airport Into $8 Billion Smart City Named Ellinikon

Greece is currently constructing a new smart city near Athens, which is set to be Europe’s largest and greenest. The ambitious project, known as Ellinikon, aims to create a “zip-code paradise” in the area. At its heart is the Riviera Tower, which will be Greece’s first skyscraper.

Ellinikon is an $8 billion project that has been in development for over a decade. Situated on the grounds of a former Athens airport, the smart city will feature not only a skyscraper but also a high-end mall and sports park. The developers of Ellinikon aim to combine beautiful coastal views with cutting-edge technology and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

The first phase of the Ellinikon project is projected to be completed by 2026, and it is expected to attract one million new tourists and inject 3.3 billion euros ($3.6 billion) into the Greek economy. This trend of high-tech new cities being developed around the world is becoming increasingly popular, with most projects taking place in China or the Middle East.

An experience center has been established as part of the Ellinikon project to showcase the site’s history and highlight the eco-friendly technologies that will be integral to the city’s future. Housed in a restored hangar from the former airport, this center opened its doors in 2022 to offer visitors insight into this innovative smart city’s vision and planning process.

Greece’s newest smart city promises to redefine urban living by combining modern technology with environmental sustainability. With its stunning views of the coastline and state-of-the-art amenities, Ellinikon offers visitors an unforgettable experience while contributing positively to Greece’s economy.
