Electric Vehicle Production Postponed, but Hybrid SUV Model to Follow; Thousands of Jobs at Risk in Europe

Ford plans to slash an additional 1,600 jobs in Spain

The company has postponed production investments in Spain for 2022 due to a revised outlook for Europe. However, they have confirmed their plans to begin producing electric vehicles in the Spanish factory by the end of the decade, which may lead to a reduction in the number of jobs. Last year, they announced the closure of 1,100 jobs at their Valencia plant due to the shutdown of production of certain vehicle models. Despite this, they plan to start producing a new hybrid SUV model for the European market and other parts of the world in 2027. They have notified unions about their intention to permanently cut 600 jobs but are open to negotiating the re-employment of the remaining 1,000 employees as part of a planned production increase starting in 2027.

The Spanish Ministry of Industry announced that the company aims to produce 300,000 cars annually at the Valencia facility, where they currently employ 4,800 workers. Last year, they also cut jobs in Germany and Britain. The company has set a goal to sell only electric cars in the EU by 2030.
