Electric Cars Losing Ground in Europe as Combustion Engine Cars and Hybrids Gain Market Share

The market share of electric cars in Europe is decreasing

In May 2021, the European Union saw a 3 percent decrease in new passenger car registrations compared to the same month in 2020, according to data from the European car manufacturers’ association ACEA. While there were almost 912,000 new cars registered during this time, the market for fully electric cars saw a decline in market share, down from 13.8 percent to just 12.5 percent. However, hybrid cars experienced an increase in market share from 25 percent to 30 percent in May.

When it comes to combustion engine cars, which include both petrol and diesel vehicles, their combined market share decreased from 52.1 percent to 48.5 percent in May. The number of registrations for fully electric cars fell by a significant amount across Europe in May, with only Belgium and France experiencing an increase in registrations of these vehicles. Meanwhile, Germany and the Netherlands saw sharp declines in electric car registrations, with drops of 30.6 percent and 11.7 percent respectively.
