Electra Aero, an American aerospace company, successfully completed a manned test flight of their EL-2 Goldfinch hybrid electric aircraft prototype at the Manassas Regional Airport in Virginia. The prototype has two seats but the final version is expected to accommodate nine passengers.
The EL-2 Goldfinch features a unique hybrid electric motor system powered by eight electric motors and a large lithium battery pack. This system allows the aircraft to take off and land quietly on electricity, reducing noise in densely populated areas. The aircraft also has a booster generator for longer flights, with a cruise speed of 320 km/h and a range of 800 km. This design not only reduces fuel consumption but also provides a quieter and more environmentally friendly flight experience.
One of the key innovations of the EL-2 Goldfinch is its patented lifting technology, which enables the aircraft to take off and land on super short runways measuring only about 90 x 30 m, equivalent to the size of a football field. This breakthrough allows the aircraft to operate with less than half the runway length required for traditional aircraft, opening up new possibilities in aviation for reaching difficult locations and small communities without traditional airport infrastructure.
Electra Aero’s focus on reducing noise pollution is evident in the low noise level of the EL-2 Goldfinch, which emits around 75 decibels at a distance of over 90 meters, similar to the sound of a vacuum cleaner.
