El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele Sworn in for Second Term, Claims Country is Safest in Western Hemisphere

President Bukele starts second term amidst controversy

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele was sworn in for a second five-year term in a ceremony attended by distinguished guests such as Spain’s King Felipe VI and the Argentine President Javier Miley. Bukele, 42, took the oath of office in the capital San Salvador, with the event broadcast live on television. In his speech at the National Palace balcony, he declared that the country had overcome fear and was now truly free.

Despite criticisms of arbitrary arrests and human rights violations, Bukele claims that El Salvador is now the safest country in the Western Hemisphere. However, the country now has the highest incarceration rate in the world, raising concerns about civil liberties. At the end of March 2022, Bukele declared a state of emergency in El Salvador, which is still in effect. Under this state of emergency, around 80,000 suspected gang members have been arrested, leading to a significant reduction in crime rates.

Bukele was re-elected in the presidential election in February 4, winning almost 83% of the vote. His party, Nuevas Ideas (New Ideas), also secured a majority in the parliamentary election. Despite constitutional prohibitions on direct re-election, Bukele was allowed to run again by loyal judges in the constitutional court. His popularity has been bolstered by his tough stance on crime, but critics have raised concerns about democratic norms and human rights violations.
