The new Egyptian Foreign Minister makes a statement on the Gaza conflict

During a phone call with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, Egypt’s new Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati made comments on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The minister expressed that Cairo is working towards reaching a deal that would involve a ceasefire and the exchange of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas. These remarks were Abdel Aati’s first on the Gaza conflict after the new government was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Abdel Aati also raised concerns about Israel’s unilateral measures in the West Bank during the call. He criticized Israel for its continuous expansion of settlements, increasing arrest operations, and systematic raids on Palestinian communities. The minister called for international pressure to be placed on Israel to halt the conflict and adhere to resolutions from the Security Council and the International Court of Justice.

In addition to his criticism of Israel, Abdel Aati emphasized the importance of opening more Israeli crossings with Gaza to fulfill obligations as an occupying power. He stressed that an immediate ceasefire was necessary, along with compliance with international resolutions and respect for international humanitarian and legal standards. Lastly, he urged continued international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza residents amidst ongoing conflict.
