Over the weekend, two violent armed attacks took place in Ecuador, resulting in the deaths of at least eight people and injuries to another eight. In the coastal province of Guayas, several armed individuals arrived in a vehicle and shot at a group of people during a volleyball game, killing two and injuring several others. Meanwhile, in the coastal province of Manabí, eleven people including five minors were kidnapped, leading to the deaths of five adults.
President Daniel Noboa condemned the violence and emphasized the ongoing battle against criminal gangs and narcoterrorism in the country. In response to the escalating violence, Ecuador remains in a state of emergency. The government has declared an “internal armed conflict” against criminal groups, leading to increased police presence and investigations into the recent violent incidents. Several arrests have been made in connection to the kidnapping and murders as authorities work to combat the wave of violence sweeping across the region.
