ECU Appoints Experienced Surgeon as Chair of Department and Chief of Surgery”.

Dr. Eric J. DeMaria appointed as Chief of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Brody School of Medicine, ECU Health

Dr. DeMaria has recently been appointed as the chair of the Department of Surgery at East Carolina University’s (ECU) Brody School of Medicine and chief of surgery for ECU Health. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of surgical services across the system, ensuring that they are safe, efficient, and of high quality. Additionally, he will be tasked with recruiting surgeons to meet the needs of the community and overseeing graduate medical programs, academic pursuits in surgery, and the ECU Health Physicians Surgeons.

Having completed his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and general surgery training at Brown University, Dr. DeMaria brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Prior to joining ECU, he served on the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College, where he established one of the first Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) fellowship training programs. He has also held positions at Duke University, WakeMed, Maryview Medical Center, and Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in various capacities related to bariatric surgery.

Dr. DeMaria is well-known internationally for his contributions to bariatric surgery, advanced laparoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery. He has published extensively on these topics and spoken at conferences around the world. He holds leadership positions in various societies, boards, and committees related to these fields.
