Economy Minister Habeck Calls for Dialogue on Tariffs as EU Proposes Heavy Duties on Chinese Electric Vehicles

Germany’s Economics Minister states that EU is willing to discuss tariffs on China

During his visit to China, Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck expressed that the European Union is open to engaging in discussions regarding tariffs on Chinese exports. He emphasized the need for fair trade practices and hoped that his message was heard by Chinese officials. Habeck’s visit marks the first by a senior European official since the EU proposed heavy duties on Chinese electric vehicles due to concerns over subsidies.

In Shanghai, Habeck stated that there is still time until November for a dialogue between the EU and China on tariff issues. He emphasized the importance of open markets but stressed the need for a level playing field. The EU’s provisional duties are scheduled to take effect by July 4, with the investigation continuing until November 2. At that point, definitive duties could be imposed for a period of five years.

Habeck highlighted the opportunity for negotiations, discussion, and dialogue between the EU and China during this phase. He believes that these talks are crucial for addressing the issues surrounding tariffs on Chinese exports and ensuring fair trade practices in the global market.
