Economy Minister Calls for Comprehensive Industrial Policies Amidst Global Economic Shifts

Giorgetti Automotive: A Case Study in EU Policy Failures

In his speech at the Automotive Dealer Day in Verona, Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti emphasized the lack of implementation of industrial policies within the European Union over the past decade. He highlighted how regulations have been implemented without considering their social and industrial consequences, as well as the absence of tools and resources to support companies through necessary transitions.

Giorgetti acknowledged that decarbonization and ecological transition objectives are crucial, but he stressed that a comprehensive strategy is necessary to achieve them effectively. He emphasized the need for Europe to defend itself against competition from countries outside the European market, particularly in light of subsidies that attract companies to establish production facilities elsewhere.

The Minister warned of an emerging economic war characterized by protectionism and duties, with a geopolitical dimension at play. He questioned whether Europe is prepared to navigate this new historical phase and give strategic significance to its foundational pillars within the European Union.
