We are currently in the midst of a harsh method of reducing inflation

Professor Rafael Di Tella, a distinguished economist with expertise in institutions, macroeconomics, and global economics, is currently visiting his home country. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from UBA and obtained his doctorate from Oxford University. The son of Guido Di Tella, a former vice minister of Economy and chancellor of two Peronist governments, he is also an accomplished athlete having represented Argentina in fencing at the Olympic Games in Seoul 88 and Barcelona 92.

In a recent interview, Di Tella expressed his thoughts on Javier Milei’s first 100 days as President of Argentina. He commended Milei for focusing on breaking fiscal dominance to stabilize and grow the economy despite some short-term suffering. Di Tella believes that it is necessary to correct the mistakes of the previous government to achieve progress. He also discussed the challenges facing inflation, recession, and the exchange rate policy implemented by Milei.

When asked about Milei’s plan, Di Tella compared him to Margaret Thatcher of the pampas due to their conviction for structural reforms. He emphasized the importance of direction in policy decisions and highlighted lessons that can be learned from Carlos Menem’s government regarding macroeconomic stabilization through structural reforms.

Regarding the US election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Di Tella expressed concerns while humorously mentioning that it might be time to return to Argentina. Additionally, he shared his thoughts on mixing clubs with public limited companies in sports and highlighted their importance in policy decisions.

Overall, Professor Di Tella’s insights into Javier Milei’s government as well as his analysis of current events provide valuable perspectives on economic policies both domestically and internationally.
