Eclipse Boosts Indiana’s Economy: Study Shows $148.5 Million Impact from Total Solar Eclipse

Indiana’s economic impact from the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse has been released by the Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC). A study conducted by Rockport Analytics revealed several economic factors that benefited from the event.

According to Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Indiana was a prime destination for the eclipse, with every part of the state experiencing 100% or 90% totality. The total economic impact was $148.5 million, with visitor-generated taxes totaling approximately $45 million, representing a 41.1% increase compared to regular visitor spending.

Indiana saw an estimated 3.5 million visitors during the eclipse period, marking a 45% increase compared to normal numbers. The study showed significant revenue increases for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and retail stores, with over 400 events hosted in Indiana during that time.

The specific breakdown of the economic impact included $45 million in lodging revenue, $63.8 million in food and beverage sales, $65 million in recreation and entertainment spending, $9.7 million in transportation revenue, and $5.4 million in retail sales. Indiana’s success in capitalizing on the event was attributed to targeted and enhanced digital marketing efforts by IDDC, as well as the coordination of state and local governments, visitor bureaus, and local businesses.

IDDC’s Secretary and CEO Elaine Bedel stated that planning for the eclipse was a statewide effort aimed at ensuring a safe and exciting event for both visitors and residents
