Duke Energy’s Smart Grid Control Center: Revolutionizing Storm Response and Power Efficiency

Duke Energy Utilizing Smart Technology to Enhance Power Restoration Efficiency

Duke Energy has recently opened a new Distribution Grid Control Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. This advanced facility utilizes smart technology to quickly minimize and resolve power outages during storms. With its central location, crews can be dispatched promptly to any area in the state, enhancing the efficiency and resiliency of power operations.

The new center is equipped with “self-healing” technology, allowing Duke Energy to restore power with just the touch of a button. This technology diverts power to resolve issues quickly, potentially reducing the number of people affected by an outage from 2,000 to 200. The ability to restore power rapidly is crucial for customers as power outages can disrupt daily life, work, and productivity.

Jeff Brooks, a spokesperson for Duke Energy, stated that the central location of the new facility may pose security risks but that they have taken precautions such as heavy fencing and constant monitoring to prevent any physical or cyberattacks. As hurricane season approaches, with an active season expected this year, the advanced technology at the Distribution Grid Control Center will play a vital role in maintaining power during severe weather events.
