Dubai’s Mangrove Initiative: A Gigantic Step Towards Climate Change Mitigation

In Dubai, a large-scale initiative is underway to cover the city’s coastal area with giant mangrove forests. This ambitious project, known as the Dubai Mangroves, aims to prevent erosion, flooding, and reduce CO2 emissions. Urb, a Dubai-based company, is behind this ambitious development plan, which includes planting over 100 million mangrove trees.

The heart of the Dubai Mangroves project lies in the mangrove tree, which has exceptional abilities to absorb CO2, prevent erosion, and support marine life. The project aims to absorb 1.23 million tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to emissions from over 260,000 gasoline-powered vehicles. While planting such a large number of trees will take many years, Urb plans to use AI-powered drones and satellite photography to monitor and promote the growth of mangrove trees.

The Dubai Mangroves project will include small beaches, social spaces, walkways, a visitor education center, botanical museum, and nature research center. Currently in the design phase, Urb has selected 6 pilot studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the project’s goals. The Dubai Mangroves project will play a crucial role in helping the city cope with the impacts of climate change.
