Doula Support Added to Medicaid Benefits in Colorado, Enhancing Maternal Health Outcomes and Closing Health Disparities

New Benefit for Health First Colorado Members: Doula Services Now Available

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) has recently announced the addition of doula service coverage for Health First Colorado Medicaid members. This new benefit is aimed at improving maternal health outcomes and supporting pregnant and parenting individuals. Doulas are non-clinical professionals who provide informational, physical, and emotional support before, during, and after childbirth. Their education and assistance can benefit pregnant or new mothers throughout the birthing experience.

The addition of this benefit will enhance access to care for Health First Colorado members, improve birth-related outcomes, and help close health disparities. Research shows that doula support can help reduce epidural use, labor duration, low-birthweight and premature deliveries, and postpartum depression rates. It can also lead to reduced c-section rates, which are higher in the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) population and contribute to morbidity and mortality.

Independent practicing doulas as well as those working in healthcare facilities or other group practices are covered under this benefit. HCPF has started enrolling doulas to support the new benefit, and those hired will be compensated as a Health First Colorado provider. They are seeking doulas who have formal training or prior demonstrated experience in the field.

Interested individuals can find more information on HCPF’s website about applying to be a doula under this new benefit. This initiative underscores HCPF’s commitment to providing Health First Colorado members with equitable, accessible, and supportive services for an empowering birthing experience.
