Double Tragedy on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas: Cruise Ship Experiences Third Notable Incident in Two Months

On Tuesday, a small blaze erupted in a crew area on the largest cruise ship in the world – the Icon of the Seas, docked in Costa Maya, Mexico. The vessel had previously been in the news when a passenger fell to his death last month. However, this is not the first notable event on the ship since its maiden voyage in January.

In May, a passenger jumped off the Icon of the Seas while only 300 miles from its origin port in Florida. Passengers on board described a chaotic scene when they thought the man had been rescued from the water, only to later learn that he had not survived. Additionally, another incident occurred earlier when a 20-year-old passenger fell to his death during a reportedly drunken fight with his father on a different Royal Caribbean cruise.

The ship’s backup power system prevented it from deviating from its planned itinerary during this minor fire incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The Icon of the Seas is currently on a week-long Western Caribbean cruise that departed from Miami, Florida on Saturday. Despite these incidents, passengers continue to enjoy their time aboard and look forward to their remaining stops on their journey.
