Disney’s New Black Princess Ride: Celebrating Multiculturalism, Addressing the Past.

Disney closes facility with racist past, The Princess and the Frog takes over

Disney has recently announced an increase in prices for its streaming service in Israel, which has sparked controversy despite being a welcomed move. The company faced backlash last year when they closed the “Splash Mountain” attraction and fans erected a makeshift memorial at the entrance, with over 100,000 people signing a petition to reverse the decision.

However, Disney is now launching a new ride based on The Princess and the Frog, featuring a black Disney princess named Tiana. This marks a historic moment for Disney as it will be the first flagship facility based on a black character after 69 years in the parks. The new ride, called Tiana’s Egg Adventures, will open at Disney World on June 28th, with a version expected to arrive at Disneyland later in the year.

Despite controversy in the past over Disney’s renovations, the company has emphasized that the new ride is not just about addressing problematic aspects of its history but also celebrating multiculturalism. The film “The Princess and the Frog” may not have been popular initially but Princess Tiana ranks high among black women in Disney character surveys.

Disney’s efforts to address problematic aspects of its history are nothing new. The company has edited content in films like “Fantasia” and “Aladdin” in response to criticism over racist portrayals. In “Fantasia,” a scene with a black centaur was edited while changes were made to lyrics that were deemed offensive to Arab audiences in “Aladdin.” Despite this criticism, Disney continues to evolve and adapt its content to reflect changing social attitudes and values.
