Disney’s Streaming Service Cracks Down on Password Sharing
Disney is taking a stand against password sharing for its streaming service Disney+ in an effort to increase revenue and sign-ups. According to CEO Bob Iger, Disney+ will start enforcing stricter rules on password sharing in June in some countries, with more widespread enforcement beginning in September.
The terms of service for Disney’s streaming services already prohibit customers from sharing their login information, but the policy hasn’t been heavily enforced until now. The crackdown on password sharing follows a similar move by Disney’s other streaming service, Hulu, which began limiting account sharing outside of households in March.
Netflix has seen a significant increase in signups due to its own password sharing crackdown and serves as a model for Disney. The decision to enforce password sharing rules more strictly is anticipated as it had been discussed for some time by Iger who mentioned that cracking down on password sharing was a priority for Disney and could help the company grow. As Disney aims to compete with industry leaders like Netflix, enforcing password sharing rules will be crucial step in increasing revenue and sign-ups for Disney+.
