Discovery of Medicinal Compounds in Golden Sea Urchins: A Breakthrough for Natural Product Chemistry Research

Uncovering valuable medicinal compounds from golden sea urchin eggs

For the first time, researchers at the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry discovered a wealth of compounds with medicinal properties in the golden sea urchin. The yellow sea urchin, also known as Tripneuster gratilla, is commonly found in Vietnamese waters on rocky bottoms and coral reefs, particularly in areas such as Phu Yen, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, and Khanh Hoa, including Truong Sa island district.

Prof. Dr. Pham Quoc Long, Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry, explained that sea urchin eggs are rich in fat, protein, and trace elements that have health benefits for humans. Researchers collected samples of golden sea urchins from Hon Tam island in Nha Trang to analyze their chemical components, including protein content, amino acids
