Discover the Wonders of STEAM with Mad Science at Walpole Public Library Workshops

At WPL, Solar Shelley Offers Mad Science Classes

Mad Science of Southern Ma & RI is currently hosting a series of workshops at the Walpole Public Library (WPL) every Thursday throughout the month of March. The goal of these workshops is to introduce children in grades Kindergarten through Third to various science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) topics.

Each week, children gather at the library to participate in engaging science activities and receive a brief lesson from Solar Shelly, a Mad Scientist who covers a range of STEAM topics. In their recent session, Solar Shelly discussed dinosaurs, worms and toys. The upcoming topic for the final class in March will be movie effects.

Before the activities began, Solar Shelly reviewed the three rules of Mad Science with the children: listening carefully to instructions, following safety guidelines and having fun. The workshop offered kids an opportunity to explore and understand how toys work while enjoying time with friends.

During the session, Solar Shelly demonstrated how toys that utilize gravity, friction, and energy work using examples such as a ladder toy and a color-changing ball. Children then had the chance to play with toys at five different stations set up around the room, each focusing on a different aspect of STEAM.
