Gazette Journal Presents Marine Science Day

On Saturday, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science hosted its annual Marine Science Day event, inviting visitors to explore its Gloucester Point campus and participate in hands-on activities. Guests had the opportunity to engage in various exhibits and demonstrations, such as learning about the importance of pollinators in the life cycle of trees at the Trees for Bees exhibit.

Food enthusiasts had the chance to sample a Blue Catfish Taco with Cabbage Slaw, prepared by Chef Winslow R. Goodier, culinary director at Nuttall’s Store. Madeline Pittman, farm and lab manager for the C-SALT Research Farm at VIMS, provided guidance to visitors like Atreus and Leonel Shilling on various marine science topics.

Attendees like Sanai Ross and ShayVonda Austin-Darrell from Hampton enjoyed the educational experience, with Austin-Darrell mentioning that Sanai aspires to be a vet and is eager to engage in all things related to science. Families such as Noah and Londyn Taylor from Gloucester had fun observing fish like grouper, spadefish, and permit in the aquarium at Watermen’s Hall. Overall, Marine Science Day offered a range of activities and experiences for guests to enjoy and learn more about marine science.
