Despite Extreme Heat and Conflicts, Millions Participate in Eid Al-Adha Pilgrimage in Gaza and Mecca

At least 550 pilgrims dead as Mecca experiences record-breaking heat

Despite the extreme heat and conflicts in Gaza, over 1.8 million Muslims participated in the annual celebration of Eid Al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice this year. In the sacred city of Mecca, temperatures reached as high as 51 degrees Celsius. Many pilgrims suffered heat-related illnesses and dehydration, despite efforts by Saudi authorities to provide cooling measures and water dispensers throughout the area.

From Riyadh, it was announced that next year will be the last summer Hajj for the next 16 years, as the pilgrimage will be scheduled in spring or winter. This decision was based on the extreme heat conditions experienced during this year’s Hajj. Despite a slightly lower number of participants compared to previous years, many Muslims around the world found great spiritual significance and fulfillment in making the journey to Mecca for Eid Al-Adha.
