Despite Absence of Russia and China, Majority of Countries Support Ukraine’s Independence at Peace Conference

Moscow asserts that the peace conference on Kyiv yielded no results

Over the weekend, a peace conference on Ukraine took place in Switzerland with representation from over 90 countries. However, Russia and China were notably absent. Despite their absence, a majority of participating countries signed a declaration in support of Ukraine’s independence and territorial sovereignty.

The Kremlin declared that the conference yielded “zero” results, with the Russian presidency spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, stating that any serious discussion about the conflict would require the presence of Russia. Moscow initiated a military operation against Ukraine in February 2022, leading to ongoing conflict and tensions.

Countries like Brazil, India, and Saudi Arabia abstained from signing the declaration. Peskov emphasized that President Vladimir Putin is still open to dialogue for serious talks, even though Moscow had previously announced its withdrawal from regions in Ukraine. The situation remains complex, with continued efforts needed to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
