The Denver business boom leads to labor and housing shortages

The city of Denver, Colorado is a growing hub for skilled professionals and businesses, with its attractive mix of creativity and high quality of life. Mayor Mike Johnston has highlighted the appeal of the city as a place to call home, as well as its ability to attract talent from around the world.

Despite this growth, Denver faces challenges such as housing and labor shortages. Between 2010 and 2020, the city’s population increased by nearly 20%, leading to a shortage of 70,000 homes. Additionally, affordability is a major concern for residents, with the median household income in Denver at $87,619 only covering about 15% of the price of an average home in the city.

As more companies move to Denver, concerns arise regarding infrastructure and investments. Scott Wasserman, president of the Bell Policy Institute, has noted the complex challenges that come with the city’s growth and the need for strategic planning to support economic mobility in Colorado.
