Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard: Missing Out on Paris Olympics, But Striving for Tour de France Success

Jonas Vingegaard omitted from Denmark’s Olympic road cycling roster

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard, who is hoping to recover from a crash in April and compete in the Tour de France, has not been selected as one of the four riders on Denmark’s men’s road cycling team for the Paris Olympics. The Olympics are set to take place after the Tour, and the team will consist of Mads Pedersen, Mattias Skjelmose, Michael Mørkøv, and Mikkel Bjerg.

Each nation is allowed to qualify a maximum of four road cyclists per gender for the Olympics. Among the selected riders, Pedersen is the most accomplished, having become the first Danish man to win the world title in the road race in 2019. He also has stage wins from all three Grand Tours, including the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France, and the Vuelta a Espana.

In a video posted on May 7th, Vingegaard expressed his hope to compete in the Tour de France, which is scheduled for June 29th to July 21st. He shared that while he is uncertain about his recovery and form, he is determined to do everything possible to compete at his best. Vingegaard will have an opportunity to join an exclusive group of cyclists who have won three consecutive Tours de France like Chris Froome and Miguel Indurain.

However, it seems that Vingegaard will not be able to participate in both events due to his lack of selection for the Paris Olympics team. The men’s road events at the Paris Olympics will take place on July 27th for time trial and August 3rd for road race. Top contenders for these events include those who opted out of participating in other major races leading up to this event such as Tadej Pogacar who won by a historic margin at The Giro D’Italia 107th edition held in 2024.
