Demonstrations in Georgia against Controversial Law Targeting Foreign Agents; EU Condemns Violence and Calls for Withdrawal of Law

In Georgia, there have been renewed clashes between demonstrators and the police in the capital Tbilisi. On Tuesday, parliament voted in favor of a controversial law targeting “foreign agents” in a first reading, which was repeated on Wednesday in the second reading. The law requires organizations that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from other countries to register as ‘agents’ influenced by foreign countries. This law is similar to a Russian law used by the Kremlin to prosecute dissidents.

Tens of thousands of people had gathered in the center of Tbilisi to protest against the new law, waving EU flags and playing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” the EU anthem, loudly. President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has condemned the violence in Tbilisi and called for the law to be withdrawn so that Georgia can continue on the path towards European integration. Georgia has been an official EU candidate country since December, and the EU has expressed concerns about the controversial law.

The clashes have faced criticism both from the West and from Georgian population who overwhelmingly support joining European Union and NATO. The government should listen to citizens on streets as they are calling for a European future for their country.
