The residents of Delaware County were left feeling betrayed after it was announced that plans for a long-term structured residence (LTSR) would not be taking place in Delco Woods. The decision was met with criticism from community members who felt that the facility was not compatible with the existing park plans for the area.
However, the county defended its decision by stating that using an existing building for the LTSR would not have impacted the open space use or the development of an extraordinary County park with numerous amenities. They emphasized that LTSRs are in short supply in the region, particularly since the closure of mental health beds at Norristown State Hospital.
In response to the rezoning of Delco Woods as open space by Marple Township, the county filed a lawsuit against the township. Despite this legal battle, the county expressed willingness to work with Marple Township to amend the zoning to avoid further litigation and ensure that the property can be utilized in a way that benefits the entire community for generations.
As this story continues to unfold, county officials remain committed to pursuing legal challenges against Marple Township in order to secure the best outcome for the development of this important property. However, updates will be provided as they become available.
