Debunking Moon Landing Denial: The Need for Scientific Literacy in China

The Confusion at China’s Chang’e-6 Launch that Sparked Fake Moon Landing Rumors

The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has clarified that no evidence of the Apollo mission was found during the Chang’e-6 mission, contrary to claims made by Pei in a broadcast. Pei had referenced a large impact crater on the lunar far side as a planned landing point for Chang’e-6, leading viewers to speculate that no remains of the Apollo mission were found. However, CAST emphasized that evidence of the Apollo moon landing exists in samples, photos, and videos.

The Institute of Geology and Geophysics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences also debunked rumors questioning the Apollo moon landing. They clarified that Pei did not claim the moon landing was faked during his broadcast. The importance of evidence in supporting such claims was highlighted by both organizations, and they encouraged people to think critically and seek truth based on facts. Despite this, scientific literacy among the population remains lower in China compared to advanced economies. The percentage of scientifically literate individuals increased from 3% in 2010 to 14% in 2023, but more work needs to be done to improve scientific literacy levels.
