Dane Blume Makes a Splash in Olympics and Beyond: Advocating for Gender Equality in Swimming

Pernille Blume, Olympic swimming champion, named to World Aquatics Bureau

Pernille Blume, a three-time Olympian for Denmark, has achieved her greatest success in the world of swimming by winning gold in the 50m freestyle at the Rio 2016 Olympics. In addition to her Olympic gold, Blume is also a double Olympic bronze medalist and three-time World Champion. Now working professionally in the health and wellness field, she is the creator of the online wellness platform Align by Blume.

As a member of the World Aquatics Bureau, which includes 18 national-level aquatics athletes, including Blume herself, World Aquatics welcomes her experience and perspective to their community. With a focus on promoting gender equality within the sport, nine women were added to the Bureau at the 2022 World Aquatics Congress. This brings the number of women on the Bureau to 15, representing 39 percent of gender balance within the organization. According to World Aquatics President Husain Al-Musallam, this proportion will be a minimum for future Bureau compositions with the goal being a balanced split between men and women in leadership positions.

The World Aquatics Bureau consists of several members including Continental Representatives, World-at-Large members and an Athletes’ Committee Chairperson. The term of office for each Bureau Member is four years renewable twice with next bureau composition being voted on by world aquatic membership at world aquatic congress in 2025.
