Curiosity’s Journey Towards the Naukluft Plateau: An In-Depth Look at its First Two Sols

Sols 1269-1270: Nearing Naukluft Plateau

Monday’s blog post outlined the plans for Curiosity as it journeyed towards the Naukluft Plateau. The delay in posting was jokingly attributed to leap day. For Monday, the rover was set to perform a combination of driving and remote sensing tasks.

On its first sol, Curiosity planned to acquire ChemCam and Mastcam observations of the target “Swartpunt” before continuing on its drive towards the Naukluft Plateau. Afterwards, post-drive imaging was scheduled to prepare for future targeting and document the Murray formation along the route.

The second sol saw ChemCam calibration activities take place, as well as a Navcam movie being recorded to monitor the atmosphere above Mount Sharp. Additionally, a large Mastcam mosaic was scheduled to be captured in order to study the stratigraphy exposed on the east side of the Naukluft Plateau.
