Crisis at Leonardo Grottaglie Plant: Unions Sound Alarm over Boeing Delays and New Production Plan

Impact of the Boeing Crisis on the Grottaglie Site

Unions Fim, Fiom, and Uilm have expressed concerns about the impact of the Boeing crisis on the Leonardo plant in Grottaglie, Taranto. This plant is responsible for building two sections of the 787 fuselage, with direct employment just under 1,000 and around 200 workers sent on secondment to other factories. Monthly deliveries of fuselages to Boeing are at very low numbers, with over 40 completed fuselages that have not yet been collected by the American customer.

The unions have received information about a new “Z60” production plan from Boeing that would reduce deliveries to the customer, further exacerbating the unsaturation of the site. They have been requesting a meeting with Leonardo, particularly with the aerostructures division, since early April. However, the company has not shown any interest in discussing this critical issue that affects production volumes at the plant.

Despite ongoing diversification projects, the unions feel that they are not generating adequate workloads to offset the uncertainties in the Boeing market and the B787 program. The unions plan to request a new meeting with the HR division and involve the Puglia Region in discussions to secure an industrial perspective for the Grottaglie site and protect all workers, especially those who have been impacted by social safety nets during the pandemic.
