Covington’s Economy on the Rise: The Impact of Supporting Small Businesses

Covington unveils economic report highlighting emphasis on new development and small businesses

In recent years, the City of Covington has experienced a resurgence, thanks in part to its commitment to supporting small businesses. This is evident in the city’s annual economic impact report for 2023, which highlights the positive growth and impact that small businesses have had on the local economy.

Covington Mayor Joe Meyer has been instrumental in this effort, emphasizing the importance of nurturing small businesses in order to continue the city’s progress and maintain a vibrant community. The city has invested over $76,000 in small business incentives since 2017, including rent subsidies and funds to improve the appearance of businesses. This support has benefited 132 projects, demonstrating the city’s dedication to helping small businesses thrive.

One business owner, Melyssa Mosier of Grainwell, expressed her gratitude for the financial assistance she received through a rent subsidy during the pandemic. She noted how this support helped sustain their business during a challenging time and also helped attract more customers to their store. Mosier and her sister have been operating Grainwell for nearly a decade and have witnessed firsthand the transformation of Covington towards revitalization and support for small businesses.

The economic impact report also showcases planned developments at sites like the former IRS location and along the riverfront, highlighting ongoing efforts to further enhance Covington’s economic landscape.
