Courts Uphold Prison Sentence for Ennahdha Leader; Firearms, Online Gambling on the Rise

Ghannouchi and his son-in-law sentenced to three years in Tunisian court

In recent news, a Tunisian Court of Appeal upheld a previous ruling that sentenced the leader of the Brotherhood’s Ennahda movement to three years in prison for illegally receiving foreign funds. The official spokesman for the Court of Appeal, Habib Tarkhani, confirmed that the court ruled to “approval of the preliminary ruling convicting both Rashid Ghannouchi and his son-in-law Rafiq Abdel Salam in what is known as the lobbying case.” Along with their prison sentences, the court ordered the Ennahdha Party to pay a fine of one million and 170 thousand and 470 dollars. The preliminary ruling was issued on February 19. Ghannouchi was arrested on April 17, 2023. He was sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of “glorifying terrorism” in another case. His sentence was tightened upon appeal to 15 years.
