Cooperating for the Common Good: US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s Commitment to a Strong Bilateral Relationship

Janet Yellen encourages China and US to engage in ‘frank and productive’ discussions, rather than avoiding ‘tough conversations’ during meeting with Li Qiang

During her meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the importance of cooperating with China in managing their relationship. Yellen stated that both countries have a responsibility to their citizens and to the global community to work together and demonstrate leadership when addressing global challenges. She acknowledged that progress has been made in stabilizing the bilateral relationship, highlighting the need for direct and open communication between the two nations.

Yellen stressed the importance of mutual respect and collaboration between the US and China, describing their partnership as “crucial.” Li echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of working together to address economic and financial challenges. During her time in Guangzhou, Yellen discussed overcapacity with Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng, with both parties agreeing to hold intensive exchanges to address these issues.

Yellen raised concerns about excessive Chinese exports potentially harming American interests and causing global economic repercussions. Beijing responded by expressing serious concerns about US trade restrictions against China. The discussions between Yellen and Chinese officials reflect a commitment to finding common ground in the complex relationship between the US and China.
