Cooling Off: How Wheeling Residents Are Coping with the Heat Wave

Local Officials Report Minimal Health Issues During Recent Heat Wave

During the recent heat wave, many people have flocked to the Bridge Park Swimming Pool on Wheeling Island to beat the heat. Local residents, including legend Kinney and Malakhi Anderson, were seen jumping backwards into the pool in an effort to stay cool.

Wheeling’s first responders and hospital officials have been closely monitoring the situation and have noted that most local residents are taking necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. The Wheeling Fire Department’s EMTs have had very few calls related to heat-related issues, thanks in part to Chief Jim Blazier’s emphasis on staying hydrated and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours.

Dr. Stanley Guertal, medical director of the emergency department at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, has also reported that they have not seen an increase in heat-related patients during this time. Both Blazier and Guertal encourage residents to find ways to cool down, such as visiting local swimming pools or cooling centers, especially for those with health problems.

As temperatures continue to rise, it is crucial for residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours, and seeking shelter in cool locations are all recommended during this time. By following these guidelines, residents can stay safe and healthy during the ongoing heat wave.
