Convenience Stores: The Fragmented Giant Adapting to New Technologies

Technology is Shaping the Future of Convenience

The convenience store industry has experienced fluctuations in its size over the years, with approximately 150,000 locations. Although it is one of the largest retail channels, the industry is still adapting to new technologies. Despite this, convenience stores play a significant role in the U.S., selling more than half of all transportation fuel and nicotine products. They also contribute a substantial portion of fast food, beer, and packaged beverage sales.

With about 152,000 sites serving over 160 million consumers each day, Convenience store industry has become an integral part of American life. During the 2024 Conexxus Annual Conference in Arlington, Gray Taylor emphasized the fragmented nature of this industry despite its size. It’s worth noting that despite being considered small compared to other retail technology markets and overall technology as a whole, convenience stores have proven resilient and unified in their efforts to adapt to new technologies and remain competitive.
