Controversy Surrounds New Autonomy Law Amid Opposition in Emilia Romagna and Other Regions

Lack of Peace Amid Autonomy: Referendums, Regions, and the Southern Front

The law on differentiated autonomy has been passed by the Northern League parliamentarians in the Chamber, with flags of the regions waving in the morning as the House gave its green light. However, some regions in the South are facing opposition to the law, with a ‘southern front’ that may even threaten majority support. The center-right and opposition parties have clashed over the issue, creating a tense atmosphere both inside and outside of Parliament.

The next step is for the law to be sent to the President of the Republic for approval before being published in the Official Journal. The President will review it based on constitutional criteria, without being influenced by any political party. Despite approval in Parliament, there are lingering doubts and disagreements among Three Calabrian FI deputies and Calabria’s governor.

The center-right party is still debating about Calderoli bill, with concerns raised about its rushed approval process. On the other hand, opposition parties are united in their criticism of it, with some planning to launch a referendum to repeal it. Meanwhile, M5S has asked President of Republic to postpone reform while center-right parties defend improvements made to law.

There are differing opinions on differentiated autonomy throughout Italy. Some regions in North eagerly want new powers previously held by state while Emilia Romagna still waits for greater autonomy and its governor criticizes Calderoli bill as flawed. It is expected that this issue will be a key topic during upcoming regional elections particularly in Emilia Romagna region.
