Consumers Energy is investing $24 million in cutting-edge technology to improve the reliability of its power grid and ensure timely power restoration in Flint, Saginaw, and other areas across the Lower Peninsula. This investment is aimed at minimizing the impact of power outages during severe weather events such as storms and ice storms.
The key technology being deployed by Consumers Energy includes automatic transfer reclosers (ATRs) that function like traffic signals by controlling the flow of electricity. These ATRs help limit the scope of power outages by isolating problems such as trees on power lines, thus reducing the number of affected customers. Additionally, nearly 3,000 power sensors will be added to the system to help detect issues and facilitate quick responses by utility crews.
Consumers Energy is also focusing on replacing old poles with newer ones and implementing system upgrades to further enhance the reliability of its power grid.
