Community Rallies Behind Science Teacher Battling Cancer: Frontier Academy Teacher Louie Riojas Seeks Support from Greeley Community Amid Tough Diagnosis

Fundraiser aids Frontier Academy science teacher in fight against cancer – Greeley Tribune

Science teacher Louie Riojas, also known as “Mr. Real House” at Frontier Academy in Greeley, is battling cancer and seeking the community’s support. Elaine Romero, wife of Riojas, has started a fundraiser to help cover medical expenses.

Riojas was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes in his neck. Despite the tough news, a PET scan in March showed that the cancer had not spread further. However, results from another PET scan completed on May 15 are still pending. Regardless of the outcome, Riojas will be facing a long road to recovery.

Due to the cancer in his tonsils and neck lymph nodes, Riojas will need to undergo surgery. Romero noted that her husband has remained positive but the diagnosis has taken a toll on him both physically and mentally. He had to take a break from teaching science at Frontier Academy, a job he loves, to focus on his recovery.

While Riojas’ friends, family and community at Frontier Academy have been supportive, they are seeking assistance to cover medical expenses as well as costs for gas, food and lodging during the surgery in Highlands Ranch. Romero expressed gratitude for any funds raised to support their family during this challenging time.

As of Wednesday morning, the fundraiser has received 84 donations and raised over $6000 towards a $10000 goal. In addition to financial help, Romero encourages loved ones and community members to leave words of encouragement or support on the fundraiser page. Donations and messages can be submitted at gofundme
